Advocacy Commission
Supports the Chapter’s local interests and coordinates with state and national offices.The Advocacy Commission is focused
on issues such as San Diego planning regulations, related state legislation proposals, transit oriented development, and
coordination with neighborhood community planning groups as well as City Agencies. From a regulatory point of view,
we monitor the City’s Technical Advisory Committee that addresses local building codes, permitting and processing. We
seek and identify opportunities for AIA-member engagement with community groups and linking the Chapter to key local
organizations, public and private.
• Urban Design Committee – operates under the auspices of the Advocacy Commission and meets monthly.
Members include design professionals and students interested in helping to shape San Diego’s future built
environment and address the “big picture” issues in the region.
Membership Commission
Supports a key Chapter function; to foster a sense of collegiality, fellowship and professional opportunity among our members.
The following operate through the Membership Commission:
• Annual Meeting – held each September to elect the new board.
• Anniversary Meeting – held in April.
• Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) – to increase awareness within our community of the value
architects bring to custom residential projects.
• Holiday Party – held in December.
• Women in Architecture – a group focused on informal networking and professional support for women in
architecture. Meetings held 2

Tuesday of the month.
Practice Commission
Coordinates with staff on the development and scheduling of professional development/continuing education programs.
Liaison to the Executive Committee for various groups.
The following operate through the Practice Commission:
• Committee on the Environment – The Committee on the Environment (COTE) works to advance, disseminate, and
advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate
built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built
environment. SD-COTE works to collaborate with the city, the public and professional organizations to build upon
synergies, share knowledge and project ideas, and coordinate volunteer efforts within the San Diego region.
• Preservation Committee – Reestablished in 2013, seeks to broaden awareness and appreciation of preservation
and educate members regarding current trends and practices; Meetings fall on the 1
st
Thursday of every month
at Noon.
• Health Care Committee – supports awareness of developments in this large and dynamic practice area through
events with OSHA, project tours, panels, and more.
Public Awareness Commission
Seeks to broaden awareness and appreciation of the benefits and value of design and inculcate an aspiration and
expectation for good architecture and planning.
The following operate through the Public Awareness Commission:
• Annual Design Awards – celebrating the achievements of local architects and their patrons;
• San Diego Home & Garden Shows (Spring & Fall) – one of the region’s largest consumer shows.
Emerging Professionals Commission
Serving the newest members of the profession as they seek full licensure status, establish professional relationships and
work to advance their careers.
The following operate through the Emerging Professionals Commission:
• Architect Registration Examination (A.R.E.) Preparation Seminars
• Intern Development Program/CIDP
• Young Architect of the Year Award
