GASTONIA HIGHWAY 7 ANUA ODOR CONTROL UNIT
CAN SHELLS REALLY
CONTROL ODOR?

he Highway 7 sewage pump station
in Gastonia had been a source of odor
problems for many years. The pump
station was located in a populated area,
and was creating many odor headaches
for the Facility Maintenance Group of
Three Rivers.
H2S was the main culprit, along
with lower percentages of other VOC
compounds. When other systems (carbon)
were not doing the job (or costing too much
in maintenance), Gastonia made a decision
to try something new and innovative
from Anua, who is a worldwide leader in
sustainable, green odor control systems.
The Monashell biofiltration system has
already become a proven and cost-effective
alternative to chemical scrubbing, carbon
absorption, and other costly, inefficient
methods. The shell media is sustainable
and renewable, with the ability to maintain
a neutral pH. This ensures optimal odor
performance across a broad range of
compounds, while simplifying operations
and maintenance. The shell media also
works even when there are high spikes
in H2S and other compounds, so there is
no need to adjust anything – the calcium
within the shells absorb these compounds
naturally – bottom line, no chemicals to
add! Odorous compounds can also be
corrosive, so a benefit of odor control is
an extension of equipment life and reduced
maintenance costs.
Replacement of the media is simple – the
used shells can be disposed in landfills with
no worries.
Covalen, the Carolina sales group,
developed the proper sizing of the Gastonia
unit based on average H2S levels, along
with a projected media life of 3-5 years.
This particular location had wide ranges
of H2S due to the cascading sewage flow,
and Gastonia wanted a minimum of 3 years
of media life.
The end result has been highly effective,
with a 99% reduction in H2S and other
compounds. Using recirculated water
and small sump pump, and a low-power
fan to drive the H2S through the media,
this unit is truly low-cost and highly
effective in treating odor issues. With the
future here now in odor control, Anua
