The second day of the NCIHC Meeting was
devoted to the
Language Access Café
, an
opportunity to learn from experts in various fields
and from each other, in which small groups were
formed to discuss the following topics:
The Joint Commission: Guidance – Addressing
Mythology
. Led by Amy Wilson-Stronks, former
Project Director for Health Disparities at The
Joint Commission.
Interpreting for LGBT Patients
. Led by Ignatius Bau,
who has served on expert advisory panels for the
Institute of Medicine, National Quality Forum,
Joint Commission, Office of Minority Health,
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
National Institutes of Health, among others.
Improving the Profession Through Unions
. Led
by Barry Fatland of Interpreters United and
Interpreter Training Program Manager for the
Bridging the Gap course offered by the Cross
Cultural Health Care Program.
NCIHC Home for Trainers – Mentoring Work
Group
. Led by Thérèse Marie Mirande Ph.D.
of Pierce College, where she developed and
coordinates the interpreting program.
NCIHC Home for Trainers – Webinars Work
Group
. Led by Erin Rosales, the Director
of Interpreter Development for Connecting
Cultures, Inc.
NCIHC Home for Trainers – Languages of Limited
Diffusion
. Led by Esther Diaz of the Texas Advisory
Committee on Qualifications of Healthcare
Translators and Interpreters, and Kamana Khadka,
Program Manager of Bridging Cultures.
Certification Update
. Led by Mara Youdelman,
Commissioner of the Certification Commission for
Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI).
Bridging the Gap – Curriculum Updates
. Led
by Barry Fatland of the Cross Cultural Health
Care Program.
After heavy discussions, participants relaxed
and networked at the Interpretini Reception and
Language Access Champion Awards, which
honor a person, program, or organization
whose work has contributed to improving the
lives of all people through the promotion of
language access in healthcare. The following
people received the award this year: Maria
Michalczyk of Coram Specialty Infusion Services
in Portland, Oregon; Patricia Greene of Southern
New Hampshire Medical Center; Victor Sosa
of Natividad Medical Center in California; and
Milly Valverde Alva of The Ohio State Wexner
Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital
in Ohio.
