as guest speakers, field trips, and professional development
for instructors.”
ABYC serves the program as a technical advisor, mock interviewer,
and much more.
ABYC asked the CAT South students, “why do you want to join
the industry, what about it makes it so attractive?” Sam chimed
in to say he “loved the action of boating, just being on the water,
and gaining a better understanding of the boat itself.” Chad
appreciates “the smell of the water and speed of the boat and not
every day being the same” and Jacob revels in the moment “being
on the water just before the sun comes up” and “job is hands
on every day.”
This group of young men is being led by someone with broad
and extensive training in the maritime trades. Guy Dorval holds
a 100 ton Captains license, has worked at marine repair facilities
and has years of experience in the industry. He knows the field
his students are being trained to enter and he wants to help
them find jobs.
And he is not the only one helping these students to understand
the industry and find work. The students received a behind
the scenes look at the Baltimore Boat Show in February before
the doors opened to meet with factory representatives, NMMA
leaders, show managers, and dealers, as well as hear a formal
presentation on the state of the marine industry and advice on
marine industry careers.
Milans went on to say that “it is imperative to find an instructor
with the passion and patience to teach plus the ability to work
collaboratively with local business and community leaders to
make classroom instruction relevant, interesting, and challenging
for students with opportunities that connect to the 21st
century workplace.”
ABYC partners with a great list of supporting schools, like The
Landing School in Maine who provides education in modern
yacht design, boat building and marine systems technology;
Rhode Island’s International Yacht Restoration School; the
New England Institute of Technology; Skagit Valley College
in Washington; Broward College in Florida, and Honolulu
Community College. The students are taught by the Standards.
