C
ongressman Andy Harris (MD-1) served as the
keynote speaker for the American Boat & Yacht
Council’s 59th Annual Meeting March 21 in
Annapolis, Maryland. ABYC was first introduced to the
congressman when he and his staff visited the Gingerville
Yachting Center (near Annapolis) as the Isobutanol Test
Site in September 2012. Gevo, ABYC, Volvo Penta and
BRP were on hand to provide them with a full tour and
demonstration, and to stress the dangers of E-15 and
show how it negatively impacts the marine industry.
Fast forward a few months to the planning of ABYC’s
meeting and when considering keynotes, Harris came up.
He had already learned and appreciated the importance
of ABYC, and with the opportunity to hear from more
boating voices, confirmed as the keynote speaker. The
gathering was held at the Severn Sailing Association and
included a night of laughs, awards, and camaraderie.
There were more than 100 members in attendance,
with members coming as far as Washington State and
Canada! The new board of directors was also announced.
A special thanks to members Dick Blackman, Gavin
O’Hare and Derek Rhymes for verifying the proxy votes
(see page 20).
Cindy L. Squires, ESQ
, formerly of NMMA and now
Executive Vice President at International Wood Products
Association, was awarded the
ABYC Horizon Award
for
her consistent and conspicuous contributions to the
future success and growth of ABYC and the recreational
marine industry.
ABYC’s outgoing chairman
George Bellwoar
, Vice
President of Sales and Marketing for PERKO Inc.
received the
ABYC C.T. “Skip” Moyer Leadership Award
for exemplifying the leadership qualities of ABYC past
presidents through hard work, personal sacrifice and
contributions to the goals of boating safety.
