onsumers who attempt to do
their own work on their own
boat, particularly electrical and/or
propulsion work, can create a lot of problems
for themselves and their guests – and
sometimes for the US Coast Guard and the
local fire department too.
Passagemaker Magazine
, as part of its Trawler
Fest programs, offers technical training
sessions for consumers through Passagemaker
University training programs. The fall event
was held again in Baltimore from September
24
th
through the 29
th
.
Some of the programs covered were of the
cruising variety but three programs offered
covered marine systems, diesel engines
and systems and marine electricity. Steve
D’Antonio and John McDevitt, both
ABYC members and Certified Technicians,
provided some of the instruction and hit
on the relevant ABYC Standards during the
seminars. Marine Electricity, Marine Diesel
Engines and Marine Systems were some of
the topics covered. This year’s programs were
held aboard the Liberty ship John W. Brown.
Trawler Fest Programs are also held in
Florida in February and Anacortes in May.

John McDevitt, an ABYC Master Technician,
is an ABYC certification instructor. He holds
eight ABYC Marine Certifications and is also a
member of ABYC’s Project Technical Committee.
He has spent over 30 years boating on the
shores of New Jersey and the tributaries of
the Chesapeake Bay. He still enjoys the Bay
and keeps his own boat in Kent Narrows, MD,
where he participates in Sales and Service for
Bluewater Yacht Sales.
