ver 1700 young adults in 13 public high schools throughout Delaware are enrolled in the ProStart Program, where students
are given a professional start (ProStart) in the food service industry with a blend of classroom learning and hands-on work
experience. This spring, 8 students from Cape Henlopen and William Penn High Schools went on to compete at the National
ProStart Invitational (NPSI) in Anaheim, California. These students competed against over 60 other Delaware students to earn the chance
to represent Delaware in the national competition.
The culinary competition highlights the
creative abilities of each team as they
prepare a three-course meal in 60minutes,
using only two butane burners with no
access to running water or electricity.
Teams are evaluated on taste, teamwork,
safety and sanitation, among other skills.
Management teams develop a business
proposal for an original restaurant
concept and present it to a panel of
industry judges who challenge them to
address the issues restaurant managers
face on a daily basis.
