Glossary of Electric & Telecommunication Terms - April 2016

3

Forward

In a complex and rapidly changing industry, it is always a

challenge keeping up with all the new terms and jargon.

After all, why spell it out when a TLA will work? That’s a

“Three Letter Acronym,” of course.

The Minnesota Rural Electric Association developed this

glossary to explain new terms, spell out acronyms and

make sense of utility jargon. The internet is a great resource

but there is also value in having this wide range of

information all in one place. Maybe you’ll want to read it

cover to cover!

As the statewide agent for cooperation among

cooperatives founded in 1941, MREA provides education,

expertise, and offerings that uniquely focus on members’

needs. We identify talent and expertise within the network

of cooperatives, including outside experts, to address

emerging and critical issues. MREA strengthens the culture

of safety in our cooperative community, and with the help

of our membership, we positively influence national, state,

and local energy policy by proactively developing and

pursuing beneficial policies.

When questions include explanations of unfamiliar terms, I

hope this glossary will give you a starting point.

If you need more information, please feel free to ask us

questions and stay in touch.
