As the main artery of the Mid-America inland waterway system
and the ecological linchpin to the 37-state Mississippi River Basin,
the Mississippi River is one of America’s greatest natural assets
and serves as an important commercial transportation corridor.
Hundreds of millions of tons of commodities are shipped annually
on the Mississippi, according to data from the Mississippi Rivers &
Towns Initiative, carrying approximately 62 percent of the nation’s
agricultural output, delivering nearly 400 tons of coal and petroleum
products, and directly supporting one million jobs and millions
more indirectly. World Trade Center Mississippi works to support
Mississippi ports along the Mississippi River such as the Port of
Rosedale, Port of Greenville, Claiborne County Port, Port of Natchez,
and Port of Vicksburg by promoting waterway transport as a cost-
effective means of transporting goods.
In 2013, World Trade Center Mississippi joined ten World Trade
Centers in states along the Mississippi River to establish the World
Trade Center Mississippi River Alliance (WTC MS River Alliance).
This alliance provides a unified voice for stakeholders and decision
makers along the river.
Founded by World Trade Center New Orleans, the WTC MS
River Alliance creates a clear channel of communication between
towns, companies, farmers, and organizations that depend on the
Mississippi River, with the goal of bringing them together to work
towards sustainable River projects and share relevant region-specific
information that directly or indirectly impacts regions and companies
within the WTC MS River Alliance.
The WTC MS River Alliance also partners with the Mississippi
Rivers & Towns Initiative, a mayor-led effort comprised of 65
mayors from towns along the Mississippi River committed to
creating a coordinated voice for regions dependent on the River.
The partnership, which includes Mississippi mayors Larry Brown of
Natchez, John Cox of Greenville, and George Flaggs of Vicksburg,
will build investments around river-centric projects at the local
level. Community foundations can partner with their World Trade
Center for assistance in completing initiatives that are linked to the
Mississippi River.
