supporting Mississippi’s farmers. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, poultry products accounted for $224
million worth of exports for Mississippi in 2013. Other
top agricultural exports include
cotton, soybean, and forestry-
related products.
In addition to agriculture,
international trade strengthens
a range of industries, including
health care, mining, finance,
utilities, construction, and
oil and gas. Petroleum and
coal commodities led the way
as Mississippi’s top exports
in 2013, accounting for $4.3
billion worth of products
exported. Aircraft engines,
medical equipment, and paper
products were among the
state’s top exports.
Less conventional commodities have also found
a niche in the global marketplace. Mississippi’s more
unique exports include customized pool cues, animal
hide, and equestrian-related products. “Even if a product
or service has no obvious foreign market, it is important
to remember that the world is a big place with many
