EDITOR’S NOTE
“Sitting is the New Smoking.” A bold statement
(now somewhat infamous), made by Dr. James
Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona
State University Obesity Solutions Initiative.
He continues, "Sitting is more dangerous than
smoking, kills more people than HIV and is
more treacherous than parachuting. We are
sitting ourselves to death.” Heavy thoughts for
a profession typically bound to a desk. How
will our profession move forward and combat
this seemingly deadly disease? Get inspired by
Bay Area companies and their innovative ideas
for promoting health and wellness at work (see
Local Story).
It is important to note that while stretch breaks
and healthy snacks prove critical to wellness,
physical health is not the only factor to a healthy
workplace. In October 2014, the Center for
Disease Control held its 1
st
annual International
Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health
TM
– highlighting the importance of the overall
safety and well-being of employees at work
(see Chart), including mental health (see Bully-
Free) and financial stability (see HR Helped Me
Retire), along with physical health (see Wearable
Wellness). Finally, the greatest benefit programs
in the world won’t matter if no one uses them.
Behavioral Economist, Stephen Wendel takes
a look at the psychology behind employees’
aversion to taking full advantage of their benefits
(see Three Reasons).
Here’s to your health!
