Building Washington: Winter 2013 - page 27

The Bigger Picture
Contractors build the homes and businesses where we live
and work and the infrastructure that keeps this country
moving. The construction industry will need to be one of
the leading drivers as the economy recovers.
In addition to implementing a compliance program,
contractors should work with industry trade associations,
unions, industry support groups and others to employ
educational programs, op-ed pieces and public relations
campaigns. These campaigns need to effectively build
an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, mutual respect and
communicate the message that the industry has made great
strides to eliminate corruption. Strides to the extent that
compliance agencies can proactively create a cooperative
environment and uniformity in policies and procedures,
owners, contractors and the public will benefit.
