Finding Balance
W
ork-life balance, a push to
properly prioritize work in
relation to lifestyle, features the
kind of faddish thinking that
can lead gifted people down the wrong path. Is
it possible that work-life balance is just a fad or,
worse still, a hoax?
For the first 18 years of my career, I separated my
work life from my non-work life. I woke up every
day, put on my work clothes and pretended to be
my work self. I assumed the persona I thought
my job title demanded. Then, when I got home
from work, or finished a long week, I took off my
work persona and stepped into being Brian – the
real Brian.
Looking back, I now realize I was making my life so
much more difficult than it needed to be. I bought
into the notion of work-life balance. In reality, I
don’t believe there is such a thing. I believe there
is just life. I believe the work you choose to do
should fit into your life; it should be part of who
you are; it should be a part of your life.
