Hammer & Nail: Spring 2014 - page 20

Quad Cities Builders & Remodelers Association — Spring 2014
A
large part of my interior design practice is remodels, primarily
involving kitchens, master suites and bathrooms.
For 2014, the kitchen trend is toward very dark cabinetry. The dark
cabinet finish is often called "Espresso" or "Java" by some brands and
as the names suggests, are a dark brown color. For the cabinet doors,
a full overlay slab front is popular again as well as simple shaker style
cabinet doors.
For countertops, the trend is on the opposite end of the color spectrum
of cabinet colors and lighter countertops are popular. Quartz products
are also popular, particularly in bathrooms.
The stove/oven hood remains the dominate focal point in the kitchen
and more massive, ornate hoods are being superseded by sleek "stove
pipe" style hoods. The sleek hoods also usually include tile all the way
to the ceiling behind the hood. The pared down sleek look provides a
more modern feel in the kitchen keeping with the growing presence of
technology in the kitchen, in particular, and the home, in general.
Many of my clients express concerns about mixing hardware finishes
throughout their home. I'm not a stickler about this and don't mind
mixing oil-rubbed bronze door hardware (a popular choice) with
stainless handles in the kitchen and polished chrome knobs/plumbing
fixtures in bathrooms. In other words, mixing it up is okay.
So, what are the color trends for interior design in 2014?
Gray is big! On walls, cabinets and furniture.
Here are a few shades of gray my clients have used recently:
Sherwin Williams 7030 Anew Gray
Sherwin Williams 7016 Mindful Gray
Sherwin Williams 7025 Backdrop
Benjamin Moore HC-166 Kendall Charcoal
I am a licensed interior designer with the American Association of
Interior Designers and have been in practice for 14 years. The majority of
my work involves residential remodel projects but I also do commercial
office and restaurant space planning and remodeling.
My most recent commercial project was the interior redesign of the Red
Crow Grille restaurant in Bettendorf.
Space planning is the foundation of my interior design practice because
a good design all stems from a good plan. To assure an accurate
and visual roadmap for our clients we utilize computer-generated
schematics (CAD drawings). Our clients can visualize their decorating
projects before any actual construction begins, avoiding costly changes
in the middle of a project.
For residential projects, placing the furniture in a workable layout helps
clients understand the design and "see" how the overall plan will look
when completed. Even using the existing furniture correctly in a room
can improve the appearance.
Another important factor in a room design equation is good
lighting arrangement. A chair with a good reading lamp can make
a space look and feel more comfortable. I usually recommend table
lamps 25 to 28 inches to provide adequate visual interest and function
for reading locations.
