Value-Based Culture
PETER CAPPELLI, DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR
HUMAN RESOURCES AND PROFESSOR OF
MANAGEMENT, THE WHARTON SCHOOL
Today’s human resources leader faces a puzzling dilemma. Systemic changes
in jobs, training and hiring practices have created complaints of a skill gap
in the labor market. The effects are profound, making it more difficult to find
jobs and at the same time more difficult to hire. What are the real attributes of
today’s job seekers? Are they really getting worse? Is there a scarcity of talent
in an era of rampant un and underemployment? What role should schools and
colleges play in preparing students for jobs? Confront the myth of the skills
gap and create an actionable path forward to put people back to work.
Named by HR Magazine as one of the top 5 most influential management
thinkers, Peter Cappelli is a prolific author and scholar. His recent research
examines changes in employment relations in the U.S. and their implications,
with publications on The New Deal at Work: Managing the Market-Driven
Workforce and Talent Management: Managing Talent in an Age of Uncertainty.
In addition to Wharton, Peter is also a Research Associate at the National
Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA and an elected a fellow of
the National Academy of Human Resources.
