THE SHORT SIDE
And then just walked out. Hey, on the positive side, everything
would be out in the open. Of course, there would probably be
lawsuits later on, but you catch my drift.
Imagine this. You are building a house and it is getting very
frustrating because it doesn’t seem like the crew is maximizing
their time very well. How funny would it be if someone from city
inspection’s department walked up on the guys one morning during a
break, threw a yellow flag in the air, and announced, “We’ve got delay
of construction. Crew leader Jimmy. That will be a $1,000 a day fine
and an automatic free back porch addition.”
I bet they would stay on schedule then.
All I’m saying is I wonder how the world would operate if our
mistakes, efforts, and daily preparations were on full display for
everybody to see. I’m betting everybody would pick their game up. I’m
betting that we would get a little better at accepting some criticism and
more importantly, I’m betting we would hold ourselves more accountable
for our actions like that offensive lineman did. I’m hoping we would hear
a lot more of “my bad” or “my fault” instead of finger pointing.
So, here is what I’m going to do around my house. I’m going
to start holding everybody a lot more accountable for their actions
including myself. After all, I am the man of the household.
For example, the next time I’m expecting dinner to be ready at 6:30
and it’s not ready for whatever reason, I’m going to throw a flag on my
wife and announce, “Delay of dinner. Dana. That will be two extra loads
of laundry to fold and thirty minutes vacuuming after dinner. Repeat
dinner preparations.” I’m betting dinner wouldn’t ever be late again.
Obviously, I’m joking about that last part. I would never do
something like that in a million years.
Because the truth is, if we threw penalty flags in our house,
I’d lead the league.
This example and all the football I watch
got me to thinking. What if real life was
like a football game? Could we handle it?
