UNIQUE FEATURES:

Students will study 19 different

branches of science in this cast-in-place building complex,

which features 200,000 square feet below grade (two

levels of program facilities and four levels of parking) plus

500,000 square feet (eight floors) above grade. Specialized

spaces include a greenhouse, clean rooms, imaging and

aquatics suites and a three-story, high-bay materials lab with

structural strong walls and a strong floor for research on

large-scale materials. Transparent glass at the ground levels

allows visitors to observe ongoing research activities.

CHALLENGES:

The large-scale materials lab required

a 4½-foot thick, 430-cubic-yard slab of concrete. The

subcontractor poured the slab monolithically while

minimizing risk for thermal cracking differential. This strong

floor and the strong walls both required extensive and

detailed rebar. Clark Construction sometimes had to work

off hours or change construction means and methods

to avoid disrupting activities in the 24/7 research and

residential buildings that surrounded the construction site.

Building Washington 19

“The George Washington University and Clark Construction Group have had a great partnership completing several projects. The

Science & Engineering Hall is a milestone project that will help the university move toward becoming a top-tier research institution.

The facility also will prepare the next generation of engineers. This project challenged us to make the most of our internal and

external resources, whether in building the high-bay materials lab, supporting an 85-foot-deep excavation or modernizing a

central utility plant in a 24/7 active medical research environment. This facility is going to have a lasting legacy on the city and the

university and we are very proud to be part of its delivery.”
