The DAQRI
Smart Helmet
is an industrial
grade, hands-free
wearable device
that improves
safety, connectivity
and efficiency. The Smart Helmet
enhances safety through a 360-degree
camera that provides spatial awareness
and a warning system of what’s behind
for caught-between incidents. The Helmet
creates new levels of connectivity by
erasing the line between the body of
knowledge that you could have and what
you do have, bringing that knowledge to
the point of use and eliminating the lag
time it takes to click-through and search
for the right piece of information. The
more sensors and feedback loops that
you have related to the worker, manager,
program and site levels, the more likely
it is that you will maintain situational
awareness and have the right person on
the right task at the right time. In 10 to
15 years, I think these technologies will
become the standard of how you do
everything by transmitting information in
a real-time, point-of-view fashion.
Technology is transforming the construction workplace and the way that contractors and subcontractors do business.
We asked five experts in this field for their thoughts on new technologies and what the future holds. We posed this question:
The amount of
data coming into
construction
projects
continues to grow
dramatically as
new technologies
provide more and different information.
Drones are flying construction sites,
taking HD video used to model 3-D
BIM visualizations. Augmented reality
systems feed real time data from workers,
including heart rate and blood pressure
from their personal protection equipment.
You have mountains of data coming in all
the time from a wide range of sources.
Because of this overwhelming influx of
information, the construction industry is
moving away from traditional enterprise
resource planning systems and towards
more active business intelligence
systems. A system with built-in active
business intelligence will alert you to
both emergent incidents and longer-term
trends, helping you react faster and
prioritize better. To deliver these systems,
software developers must get even closer
to the industry so they understand what
it is that contractors do, what they care
about and what they need.

What new technologies can help the commercial
construction industry improve their operations?
Point of View
Construction
companies are
spread out across
their territories.
Yet both field and
office staff need
to make decisions
on a daily basis
that require information possessed by
the other. Effective communication
is paramount. With tight integration
with the accounting system and job
cost structure, mobile software helps
companies run more efficiently and
provides a more accurate picture of
actual job costs.
hh2 Remote Payroll enables companies
to track their labor using mobile devices
such as iPhones, iPads or laptops. It is
designed so that field staff have easy
access to see and do only what they
need to see and do. It saves time and
improves costing accuracy.
hh2 Field Reports allows companies to
log the daily events on a jobsite. This
lowers costs by substantially reducing
the time it takes to keep daily logs and
improves a firm’s chances of coming out
on top during litigation.
