UNIQUE FEATURES:
The project involved demolition
of all of the existing Bel Pre Elementary School except the
gymnasium and the construction of a LEED Gold building to
replace it. The new school features geothermal HVAC systems,
a vegetative roof, lighting controls and sun shades, low-flow
toilets and low VOC adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and
carpets and a bio-retention pond. Lend Lease restored and
redeveloped a brownfield site and recycled 75 percent (by
weight) of the construction and demolition waste.
CHALLENGES:
Lend Lease had to maintain the structure of
the existing gymnasium in order to incorporate it into the new
building. The project neighborhood borders on a public park
governed by Montgomery County Public Parks Commission’s
strict tree-saving restrictions; Lend Lease managed to
preserve all but one tree. A temporary road for installation and
maintenance solved the tight site problem, and the company
designed and built on-site pumping stations to handle run-off
filtering since there were no sediment control ponds.
Building Washington 21
“Lend Lease is very proud of our 20-year relationship with the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system and we were excited
to have had the opportunity to build the new replacement primary school for the Bel Pre community. The project came with several
site-related challenges; however, the team was able to work with the community, public officials and MCPS to achieve the goals. We are
also very proud of exceeding the established LEED requirement and achieving LEED Gold status.”
