UNIQUE FEATURES:

The multi-story structural and interior

renovation of the historic chancery and the construction of an

adjacent addition provided new diplomatic and administrative

space for the embassy. Replacement of masonry load-bearing

walls with structural steel spans provided open, unencumbered

work areas. Exterior work included façade restoration, historic

window replacement and new slate roofing. The underground

garage includes an auto lift, and a sky bridge connects the

two buildings. Interior etched glass partitions are one of many

high-end custom finishes on the project.

CHALLENGES:

Subcontractors named this the “ship in a

bottle”project because its tight urban environment and proximity

to two adjacent embassies presented logistical and sequencing

challenges. The company closely planned work, material staging

and deliveries to ensure minimal disruptions to the surrounding

community. Placing custom finishes like the etched glass panels

presented a significant challenge due to the facility’s security

requirements and layout, but the team used virtual design and

construction software to ensure proper installation the first time.

20 Building Washington

“The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Chancery Annex Project gave Forrester a great opportunity to combine our team’s expertise managing

challenging projects with cutting- edge technology tomeet our client’s needs. Every load-bearingmasonry wall and floor joist was removed and

the entire building was supported while a new foundation, structural steel supports and floors were installed. All of this was done while accessing

the structure solely through a 10-foot-wide driveway adjacent to a historic building and another embassy. Forrester used VDC software to ensure

each task was properly coordinated, sequenced and completed and site access maintained.”
