The EMMs utilize different internal configurations and modules
depending on the production year and engine model family. From 15hp
to 30hp outboard motors, the EMM is mounted inside a clear plastic case.
The 40hp through 90hp outboards require a larger EMM module while the
V-4 and V-6 versions use the same housing but with a greater number of
components and circuits for the additional cylinders and the NMEA2000
networking data.
Although some people may not embrace having computers controlling all
the aspects of their engine, it is the EMM that allows a modern outboard
motor to run cleanly, efficiently, and economically. In addition an EMM
oversees the charging of the batteries, maintains low emissions output,
and protects the motor should a malfunction occur. As with cell phones,
home entertainment, and newer vehicles, it is modern electronic controls
that allows us conveniences and products which were unimagined only
a generation ago.
