Tips to Pass Your Certification Exam
By Marty Wilson, UMC, NCRWA Circuit Rider
P
assing a water or wastewater certification exam is a challenge for
everyone who takes one. Some people tend to do better on test taking in
general and therefore they will do better on these examinations even if
they are not as knowledgeable as someone who knows the material but
freezes up on test day. Why are some people better test takers? Believe
it or not it has very little to do with how “smart” the test taker is. I have
met many water/wastewater operations specialist that do an exceptional
job because they know and understand all the right things to do on the
job, but they struggle on the exam. If you are one of these people read
on for some tips that will help you become a better test taker.
First of all, as you begin to think about taking an exam it is important
to have a game plan. Just like a football team preparing for the Super
Bowl, you need to have a plan that will help you succeed in obtaining
your goal. It is required to take a certification course prior to applying to
take the exam, so this is a good time to formulate your plan. To the right
is an example of a game plan:
After you have a plan, try to follow it as much as you can. Sometimes
things happen that will prevent you from doing exactly what you
planned. Don’t stress, just adjust your plan. Remember it is better to
study a little each day as opposed to cramming the day before the exam.
Once you get to the exam site try to RELAX. Of course this is easier
said than done but it doesn’t help to be worried and stressed. Everyone
has some test anxiety so this is normal; however, do not let this feeling
overwhelm you. If you have prepared according to your plan you should
feel confident that you will be able to do well. Just before the exam try
to clear your mind and think a relaxing thought like sitting on the beach,
fishing or hunting – something you enjoy.
I hope these tips will help you pass your certification exam. Remember
that your friendly NCRWA regional circuit rider is ready, willing and
able to assist you as you prepare to take your exam.
