Tips to help you
become a better test taker
Take a certification course.
Review certification course material daily until exam day.
(Short study sessions are best, for example 30 minutes a
day or one course chapter. Long “cram” sessions are not as
effective).
Take an extra 15 minutes a day to concentrate on any area
that is hard for you. (Math, for example)
Use all available resources to help understand any material
that you are not familiar with. (Co-workers or your supervisor
may be able to help. Other resources include: NCRWA
circuit riders, someone you know in another system, people
you met at the certification course, the course instructor, or
the internet).
Practice the math problems. Take one math problem a
day that you were shown how to work in your certification
course. Work that one problem over and over again until
the steps become easy to remember. Once you have that
problem mastered move on to another type of math problem
the next day. When doing math problems always WRITE
DOWN each step of the problem as you complete it. DO
NOT JUST PUNCH NUMBERS INTO YOUR CALCULATOR
WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WHY YOU ARE DOING
THAT CALCULATION.
Get a good night’s rest the night before the exam.
Plan to get to the exam site early. Plan ahead on when you
need to leave, what to take, what directions to take, where
to eat, etc. (in other words, eliminate or limit stress on the day
of the exam).
